The Chantels were one of the first African-American female vocal groups to gain national attention. Their 1958 hit "Maybe" is considered a standard for other girl group songs, and lead singer Arlene Smith was one of the first female rock performers to write her own material. The Chantels were active from 1957–1970 and have been active again since 1999.
