“Mack the Knife” was composed by Kurt Weill with lyrics by Bertolt Brecht in 1928 for The Threepenny Opera, where it was introduced as “Die Moritat von Mackie Messer.” The song entered popular music through early German stage recordings and became widely known in English after Louis Armstrong’s 1956 recording, followed by Bobby Darin’s 1959 version which became a major hit, with later notable interpretations by Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Robbie Williams. Mack the Knife was originally written in 1928 by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht for The Threepenny Opera. What began as a German theater piece soon took on a life of its own in the jazz world. Louis Armstrong’s 1955 recording introduced it to a wider audience, and Bobby Darin’s 1959 version turned it into an international hit. Since then, the song has been performed by countless artists, from Ella Fitzgerald to Frank Sinatra, each bringing their own twist. Subscribe for more timeless jazz, blues,

Today’s song spotlight is “Ballad of the Easy Life” from Marc Blitzstein’s English adaptation of Kurt Weill’s DIE DREIGROSCHENOPER (THE THREEPENNY OPERA). This week, @atlantic_classicalorchestra presents the DIE DREIGROSCHENOPER Suite in Vero Beach, Florida! 🎶🎷🎻🎺 Fun fact: Weill’s music paired with Brecht’s texts inspired subsequent Broadway hits CABARET, CHICAGO and URINETOWN. Mack the Knife began as “Die Moritat von Mackie Messer” in the 1928 German musical The Threepenny Opera, with music by Kurt Weill and lyrics by Bertolt Brecht. It later became a jazz standard, famously recorded by artists like Louis Armstrong, Bobby Darin, and Ella Fitzgerald. The song’s upbeat melody contrasts cleverly with its dark storytelling, making it a standout in both jazz and pop history. Hi! Here’s the opening track from my upcoming ep… ok, it’s longer than an ep… now I call it a KV comp. The first 6 tracks — which are the ones that fit on a single LP — are new to the world, with one foot in the not-too-distant past and the other with one tiny toe pointing toward the future. Together my feet are like a couple spanning time together. Four songs on this comp were started at Stinson Beach, CA in September 2019 for a few days of recording with Rob Laakso, Stella Mozgawa, Chris Cohen
