Just how deep is peat? Peat can range in depth, with our lowland bogs typically 5 to 10 metres deep and our blanket bogs up to 5 metres. Peat depth increases by up to around one millimetre each year, meaning that a metre of peat can take 1,000 years or longer to form! It takes 50 years to lock up carbon equal to the weight of a two-litre bottle of water in a square metre of peat. In 1,000 years, this will have locked up about 40 kg of carbon, the weight of 20 full bottles. Peatland restoration i

Peat bogs are so wet, and contain so little oxygen, that when plants die and fall into the bog, they’re unable to decompose. That means that all the carbon is kept in the wetland, rather than being released as the organic matter breaks down. But when drained or mined, peat bogs go from being a carbon sink to a carbon source, releasing centuries of carbon into the atmosphere. In this reel, find out what you can do instead as a home gardener. SUBSCRIBE to planet maine at mainepublic.org/planetmain

Peat bogs, like this one in Saint-Sylvère, Centre-du-Québec, are much more than just stretches of stagnant water. They’re biodiversity powerhouses and natural sponges that manage water flow and store carbon, vital in the fight against climate change. 🌍💚 Thanks to a generous 116-hectare ecological gift from Cascades last March, most of the Saint-Sylvère peat bog is now protected! Conserving this land not only connects important natural habitats, but also helps vulnerable species like the Canada

A peat bog restoration project in Northern Ireland is helping to create cleaner drinking water while tackling climate change. The bog is located on the shores of Lough Bradan in County Tyrone, which supplies the Omagh and Drumquin areas with water. #COP26BBC | BBC News NI
