1963 Lotus powered by Ford | Indy 500 Race Morning Running in the Historic Car Lap before the race - Dan Gurney's 1963 Indy 500 machine. The lightweight Lotus chassis was based off the Grand Prix Lotus 25 chassis. It's powered by a 255ci carbureted Ford V8 producing 376 horsepower. This was the backup car used by Gurney in the race after crashing his primary in practice. Parnelli Jones was a fearless American racer who won the 1963 Indy 500 and became the first to qualify at over 150 miles per hour. Known for his aggressive style, he nearly won again in 1967 driving a revolutionary turbine car. He also conquered off-road, winning the Baja 1000 in 1971 and 1972.
