A Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft has crashed in to a school campus in northern Dhaka — killing at least 16 people, including its pilot, and injuring dozens, officials said.

DHAKA, Bangladesh — A Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft crashed into a school in Dhaka, the capital, shortly after takeoff on Monday afternoon, catching fire and killing the pilot and at least 19 other people, most of whom were students, officials said.

More than 160 people were injured after the training aircraft crashed because of a mechanical error, military officials said. The country’s interim leader called the loss “irreparable.”
