Cooler, cloudier conditions and periods of light rain are forecast in San Diego County through Friday night as a weakening atmospheric river moves southward into Southern California, according to the National Weather Service.

Some areas in Southern California, a region plagued by drought conditions, saw more than inch of rain this weekend.

Warm and dry weather will close out the weekend, with rain and snow expected in parts of the region by midweek, according to the National Weather Service.

"Rainfall is expected to decrease to the south with around one-quarter to one-half inch for the Inland Empire and Orange County, and around one-third inch across northern San Diego County to around one-tenth inch across southern San Diego County.

The latest forecasts have the rain arriving Wednesday and lingering off and on through Friday, before skies clear up next Saturday.

Following weeks of critically bone-dry conditions, San Diego County could finally get a taste of rain over the weekend.

Scattered showers are expected early this week for San Diego County, with a slight chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon into Monday morning for the coast, valleys and mountains, forecasters said Sunday.

The National Weather Service says there is a chance of thunderstorms into Monday, while there is a chance that rain may hang around San Diego until Wednesday.

The precipitation, which was brought on by a cold low pressure system, was a much-needed break from stubborn arid conditions primed for potentially erratic fire behavior.

While a stationary atmospheric river dumps rain and snow in northern and central California this week, areas south of Los Angeles, including San Diego, will get significantly less precipitation.
