Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ordered on Monday the arrest of Democratic lawmakers who left the state to prevent Republicans from having quorum to pass the initiative. State House lawmakers passed a motion allowing the Speaker of the House to issue civil warrants for the arrest of those who did not attend the session.

New York State lawmakers are responding as Democratic lawmakers in Texas are facing civil arrest warrants for fleeing the state to block a vote that could redraw the state’s electoral map in favor of Republicans.

Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday he plans to put new district lines in front of voters in a special election on Nov. 4, but only if Texas moves forward with its redistricting plans.

Last week, Newsom floated the possibility of calling a special election in November to ask voters to approve new temporary congressional maps after the Texas Legislature, at the behest of Republican Gov.

The two states' existing maps putting Democrats within just three seats of reclaiming a U.S. House majority in the midterms.
