Acknowledging Samsung, TSMC and other chipmakers, Musk said the Terafab project needs to get off the ground because existing semiconductor partners aren't making chips fast enough. If built, Terafab would be the largest semiconductor manufacturing plant in the world.
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO talks a big game for the plant, saying it would be 100 million square feet. That'd be 12 times the size of Samsung's plant in Taylor.
Elon Musk unveiled plans for a massive chip manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas, that he said will power his "galactic" aspirations.
The kicker: It will mostly be in space.
Because it is a class action case, it is not clear what amount in damages Musk will have to pay, but it is likely in the billions.
Musk launched the "TERAFAB" project at an event inside the old Seaholm power plant on Saturday night. He said the project would include an Austin-area "advanced technology" facility and thanked Gov. Greg Abbott for his support.
