The U.S. Open turned into a sprint through the soggy fairways of Oakmont on Sunday following a downpour that caused a delay of 1 hour, 37 minutes as Sam Burns tried to hold off Adam Scott for his first major.

The suspension of play came at 4:01 p.m. ET. Play will resume at 5:40 ET. Oakmont was soaked in the weeks prior to the U.S. Open, then largely dried out until a deluge dropped more than an inch of rain on the course on Friday evening.

The U.S. Open final round was halted at 4:05 p.m. after torrential rain soaked Oakmont, leaving standing water on the greens and in fairways, with play set to resume at 5:40 p.m. The players were shuttled to the safety of the clubhouse with 54-hole leader Sam Burns,

The winner of the 2025 U.S. Open will take home a hefty paycheck of $4.3 million, the same amount as last year's winner Bryson DeChambeau.

The U.S. Open being completed on Sunday is now dependent on the weather and daylight cooperating at Oakmont. NBC's Mike Tirico reported that the U.S. Open could withstand a two-hour weather delay and still finish the final round on Sunday. The delay ended up lasting less than two hours indicating the final round could be completed as scheduled.
