Tropical Storm Erin is forecast to strengthen into the first hurricane of the Atlantic season by Thursday and could become a major Category 3 hurricane by Sunday. But as of now, Erin is not expected to pose a direct threat to the U.S. The forecast path takes Erin north of the Caribbean Islands, including Puerto Rico.

As temperatures continue to heat up this summer, hurricane season is heating up as well. It’s still the first half of the season, but we’re quickly approaching the peak and the Atlantic is starting to look the part.

The official intensity forecast released Tuesday morning shows the storm growing into the season's first hurricane with the potential to become a major hurricane by early Sunday.
