At least 56 people are dead after a bus plunged off a bridge Monday on the outskirts of Guatemala's capital, Guatemala City Fire Department spokesman Carlos Hernández told CBS News.

A bus veered off a highway bridge into a polluted ravine in Guatemala City early on Monday, killing at least 51 people and trapping survivors, a spokesperson for the city's fire department said.

At least 55 people are dead after their bus plunged into a gorge and landed under a bridge Monday on the outskirts of Guatemala's capital.
